This Army Physical Fitness Test Result Calculator tool will convert your actual results in each category into points and allow you to check the results before going to the testing site. Enter your age, select a standard, and enter the values for push-ups, sit-ups, and run that you can achieve.

The tool will assess the five areas of the Army Fitness Test (AFT) based on your age and gender according to army guidelines, and give you a total score as well as an outcome (pass or fail).

What is the Army Physical Fitness Test?

The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) is an official fitness test used by the United States Army. It was implemented on June 1, 2025 and replaces the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT).

It measures the strength, endurance and speed that soldiers need to carry out their duties. All soldiers complete the same five events which are graded against standards set for age groups and levels of ability.

The five areas of AFT:

The score for each section is between 0 and 100 points. The results of the five sections are added up, with a maximum total score of 500 points.

Event

What you do

How it is scored

3-rep-max deadlift (MDL)

Lift the heaviest weight you can for 3 reps

Pounds lifted, higher is better

Hand-release push-up (HRP)

Max push-ups in 2 minutes, chest to ground

Repetitions, higher is better

Sprint-drag-carry (SDC)

Five 50-meter shuttles: sprint, drag, carry

Time, faster is better

Plank (PLK)

Hold a straight-body plank as long as you can

Time held, longer is better

Two-mile run (2MR)

Run two miles on a flat course

Time, faster is better

If you cannot run for medical reasons, four alternative endurance tests are available in the AFT: 2.5 mile walk, 12 km ergometer bike ride, 1 km swim or 5 km rowing. These alternate tests are graded as pass or fail only. If the required time is met, then a minimum of 60 points can be earned for this section.

AFT rating method:

There are two rules to determine whether a test is passed or not. At least 60 points must be obtained in each section and the required total score must also be met.

Army Fitness Test (AFT) Pass Criteria

The total points required depends on the position. For soldiers in specified combat occupations (21 types), gender-neutral standards apply, which require a score of 350. All other individuals are evaluated by gender and need a score of 300.

These standards are age-dependent, so the corresponding weight or time required for 70 points may differ between a 25-year-old and a 45-year-old. Soldiers who achieve 465 points or more are exempt from body fat measurement.

Instructions for using this calculator:

First select the rating criteria and enter your age, then the calculator will automatically choose the correct rating table.

Next, enter the results for each exercise. For deadlifts, you'll measure in pounds, while push-ups will count how many repetitions you can do. For timed disciplines, just type in minutes and seconds once; for example, if your sprint time is 1:45, simply type "1 minute 45 seconds."

As you enter values in the fields, the scores for each section, total score and result (pass/fail) will be updated. The bar graphs compare the results of each section against a line at 60 points so that you can see your weaknesses at a glance.

Example calculation:

For example, a 28-year-old male Soldier participating in the common standards test has the following scores: Deadlift - 250 pounds; Push-up Handstand - 40 repetitions; Sprint Drag Carry - 1:45; Plank Hold - 2:00; and 2-Mile Run - 16:00.

These results are converted to 81, 82, 90, 72 and 89 respectively. The total is 414 points with each individual area well above the minimum of 60 points. As 414 exceeds both the 300 and 350 thresholds it passes easily.

ACFT to AFT changes:

The AFT reduced the six areas of the old ACFT to five. The stand power throw was eliminated due to its limited applicability and injury risk.

The plank was retained as an exercise for the core muscles and the assessment was updated to reflect that it had previously replaced the hanging leg tuck. The exercises deadlift, hand release push up, sprint drag carry and two mile run were all retained.

Suggestions for improving your score:

Spend study time on the areas where you are scoring lowest rather than focusing on your favorite subjects. If any one area is below a score of 60 points, then the entire test result will fail. So it's more effective to improve an area that currently scores 55 points to 65 points than to gain additional points in an area already scoring 90 points.

Practice timing yourself in disciplines with a stopwatch and get used to the pace of minutes and seconds. Small improvements on sprints, drags, carries or runs can often add up to big point totals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the required score for the AFT?

To pass the Army Fitness Test (AFT), you must score at least 60 points on each event and also meet the total number of required points. The common standard is 300 points. For certain 21 combat occupations, the gender-neutral Combat Standards Norm is 350 points. Regardless of your overall point total, a score below 60 points in any single event will result in failure to pass the test.

Is the AFT evaluated by age and gender?

For most soldiers the answer is yes. The common standard will be normalized by both age and gender. The combat standard is gender neutral but age dependent so older soldiers regardless of their position must meet the same age adjusted standard.

When was the ACFT renamed to AFT?

The Army's physical fitness test will be introduced from June 1 (2025) and replaces the current Combat Fitness Test. The Stand Power Throw has been dropped while the remaining five elements are deadlift, handprint push-up, sprint drag carry, plank and a two-mile run.

What are alternative endurance tests?

Soldiers with disabilities who cannot run can instead walk a distance of 2.5 miles, cycle on a stationary bike for 12 km, swim 1 km or row 5 km. These alternative events are judged as pass/fail only and those who complete the required time receive at least 60 points rather than a graded score.

What do you get if you score 465 on an AFT test?

Soldiers with a total score of 465 or higher are exempt from the body fat measurement, which is significantly above any passing threshold and demonstrates strong and balanced performance across all five areas.
