Pressure Calculator

Introduction

Pressure is defined as the amount of force exerted per unit area. It is a scalar quantity; it has magnitude but no direction. The force is applied perpendicular to the surface of the object. Our nifty Pressure Calculator will help you calculate it using the Force and Area variables.

The SI Unit of Pressure is Pascal (Pa). It can also be expressed using various other units, Newton per square meter, pound-force per square inch (psi), centimeter of water, centimeter of mercury, millimeter of mercury, an inch of mercury, torr, bar and also in terms of Atmospheric Pressure.

How to use the Pressure Calculator?

Using the Pressure calculator, you can calculate the pressure exerted for a force applied over a specific area.

The variables in the calculator include

Force (F) The amount of force applied

Area (A) The surface area over which the force is applied

Pressure (P) The pressure which results as a result of the force applied

What is Pressure?

Pressure is defined as the force per unit area. The force exerted will be perpendicular to the surface area of the object.

Have you ever wondered why we could cut things more easily with a sharp rather than a blunt knife?

Well, the area at the end of a sharp knife is smaller compared to a blunt knife, so you need to apply less force to cut things, whereas with a blunt knife, the area at the end of the knife is greater, and we need to apply more force to exert the same amount of pressure on the surface.

Pressure is commonly expressed in Pascals (Pa). It is the SI unit. 1 Pascal is defined as the force of 1 newton over 1 sq meter. It can also be expressed in units such as Newton per Square Meter (N/m^2), Pound-force per Square Inch (psi), Pound-force per Square Foot (psf), torr, bar (b), an inch of mercury (inhg), foot of mercury (ft).

How to calculate Pressure?

You can calculate pressure using the following formula.

P=FAP = \dfrac{F}{A}

Where,

P → Pressure

F → Force

A → Area

FAQs

What is pressure?

Pressure is a measure of the force exerted on a given area. It is defined as the force per unit area and is typically measured in units of pascals (Pa) or pounds per square inch (psi).

Because pressure is defined as force per unit area, it is directly proportional to the force. Hence, the more force exerted on a particular area, the greater the pressure.

Pressure and temperature are related in gases, as the temperature of a gas is directly proportional to its pressure when the volume is kept constant. Gay-Lussac’s Law describes this relationship.

Pressure in a fluid is directly related to depth, as the pressure at any point in a fluid is proportional to the weight of the fluid above it. The pressure at the bottom of a fluid will be greater than the pressure at the top due to the weight of the fluid above it.

What is the relationship between pressure and atmospheric pressure?

The pressure at any point on the earth’s surface is affected by atmospheric pressure. In other words, it is the pressure exerted by the weight of the air above it. So, the pressure at sea level is about 101,325 Pascals (Pa) or 14.7 pound-force per square inch (psi), which is considered standard atmospheric pressure (atm).

The pressure and speed of a fluid are inversely related; so as the pressure of a fluid decreases as its speed increases. Bernoulli’s principle describes this relationship. When a fluid flows through a constricted section, such as a pipe, the speed of the fluid increases, causing a decrease in pressure and an increase in velocity.
